WebbsCityThe Musical:

WEBB’S CITY (flexible cast 18-45)

Five decades of the American dream in the story of one man. Talking mermaids, dancing chickens, dollars bills for 99 cents. J.E. “Doc” Webb was known as the “P.T. Barnum of retail.” The visionary entrepreneur opened a tiny drug store on the edge of the St. Petersburg, Florida ghetto in 1927 and turned it into a 77 store conglomerate covering nine city blocks. Long before there were shopping centers, malls or Walmarts, there was Webb’s City.

The unique and moving story of the booms and the busts of the man and the American Dream in the mid-20th century.

“Credit playwright-director Bill Leavengood for pulling off what many New York talents often can’t manage. He’s fashioned a heartwarming tale around a real life person who, like everyone else, was a mix of good and bad. Because of Leavengood’s skillful directing, he was able to deliver a vivid, fast-moving panorama about the history of St. Petersburg, all the while pushing through a story line that keeps you glued to the action. In the end, you care about every character in the cast...”

Joanne Milani | Tampa Tribune

“Steve Wilkerson gives an uncanny performance as Webb... Ahlin is a master of the catchy tune, and Leavengood has a knack for narrative and a well-timed punchline.”

John Fleming | St. Petersburg Times

“Ahlin’s songs were catchy, original and easy to love... Leavengood’s not just a scriptwriter, he’s a treasured local industry”

Opinion Section St. Petersburg Times:

“This is a first-class musical that could hold its own with any other musical on Broadway”

“What a refreshing, entertaining and nostalgic production. It is one of the best experiences we have ever had at the Mahaffey Theatre”

“Watching WEBB’S CITY: THE MUSICAL with a full house at the Mahaffey Theatre was a real treat; it was like a citywide reunion. The show was fun, music and voices were great, staging was simple and clever... As a citizen of 50 years, I say, ‘Wow!’”

“Five letters have been published to date praising WEBB’S CITY: THE MUSICAL and giving reasons for it to be rerun this winter or spring. I agree 100% with the sentiments of these writers!
